Ceremonial University of Ljubljana Senate Meeting

Ljubljana, 4 December 2018 – At today’s Ceremonial Meeting of the Senate, University of Ljubljana Rector Dr. Igor Papič conferred the highest awards of University. The title of Honorary Doctor of the University of Ljubljana was received by Prof. Aharon Oren, Dr. Lluis M. Mir and Prof. Duncan M. Haldane. The title of Honorary Senator was received by Prof. Marko Letonja and Prof. Dr. Jan Svejnar. The Rector also awarded Golden Plaques and certificates of recognition to young higher education teachers and staff.

This year’s celebrations during University Week are already underway with a view to the centenary which we will celebrate next year, said the Rector of the University of Ljubljana, Prof. Dr. Igor Papič, in his opening remarks, underlining that the University of Ljubljana continues to be one of the best universities in the world, as indicated by recognised international scales. “Our scientists rank at the very top globally, and we must motivate them further in the future so that they will publish their work in reputable international journals. We are proud of our great success in obtaining projects from the European Research Council, where, given the size of our country, we record exceptional achievements. We are the only Slovenian university to have been awarded ERC projects, the fifth of which we won in the summer of this year. In the Call for Applications of the European Research Area, ERA Chair, we were awarded the COMPETE project to establish a Microprocessing Engineering and Technology Centre. This is the first and only Slovenian project of this type within the Horizon 2020 programme,” said the Rector, outlining the most prominent successes of the University of Ljubljana. He also highlighted the important steps taken in the area of internationalisation. “This year, we joined the international consortium of universities which is to take part in the first, pilot European Universities call for applications. In November of this year, the University of Ljubljana became a full member of Venice International University.” Outstanding results both at home and in international competitions have also been achieved by students. The Rector therefore commended everyone at the University willing to go that extra step further in their work and studies, those who want and can do more – for themselves, for the University and for society.

This year the title of Honorary Doctor of the University of Ljubljana was received by Prof. Aharon Oren of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem for his exceptional contribution to the development of science in the world in the field of microbial ecology, and for his important scientific and educational collaboration with the University of Ljubljana. Dr. Lluis M. Mir of the University of Paris-Saclay received the title for his exceptional contribution to the development of science in the world in the field of cell and medical electroporation and for his important scientific and educational collaboration with the University of Ljubljana. Prof. Duncan M. Haldane became an Honorary Doctor of the University of Ljubljana for his exceptional contribution to the development of science in the world in the field of quantum Hall fluids and magnetic chains, and for his important scientific and educational collaboration with the University of Ljubljana.

Nobel Prize winner and British scientist Prof. Haldane, of Princeton University, was also the keynote speaker: “On my mother’s side I am Slovenian, and I have always identified as half Slovenian and half Scot. I am therefore honoured that the biggest university in Slovenia has awarded me this title.” In his talk he touched on the drain of young educated people abroad: “For such a small country it is entirely normal for young and talented scientists to want to gain experience at international research institutions and in that way become internationally established. It is essential for the environment in the country to be such that these people return, that they are enabled to create their own research groups and that their work is not constantly exposed to shifts in funding owing to changes in ministers and governments. Compared to other small countries, Slovenia has an advantage, since it is close to the biggest European research centres and it is my strong hope that even in the case of Brexit it will continue its cooperation with British research centres.” He concluded his address with words of thanks in Slovenian.

The title of Honorary Senator of the University of Ljubljana was received by Prof. Marko Letonja of the Academy of Music of the University of Ljubljana for his important contribution to the international standing of the University of Ljubljana and for his exceptional artistic and educational work in the field of conducting. Prof. Dr. Jan Svejnar received the title of Honorary Senator for his exceptional contribution to the international standing of the University of Ljubljana and to strengthening the research potentials and achievements in the field of economics.

The Golden Plaque, awarded by the University of Ljubljana for extraordinary merit in the development of scientific, pedagogical or artistic creation, and for enhancing the reputation of the University of Ljubljana, was conferred this year on 13 professors of the University of Ljubljana, and nine special commendations for exceptional educational and research achievements were awarded to young higher education teachers and staff.
